SSA hosts a series of (free) open tryouts to select rosters for our Academy and Competitive program teams.

U8-U10 Academy tryouts: May 18th/19th/20th to establish a player's suitability for acceptance into the Academy pool.

U11-U14 Competitive program tryouts: May 18th/19th/20th to assign players to our SCCL (U11+ Boys and Girls) MLS Next (U13+ Boys), GAL (U13+ Girls), NAL (U13+ Boys), DPL (U13+ Girls), and EDP (U13+ Boys and Girls) League programs.

Dear SSA Swarm FC Families,

As we prepare for the 2026–2027 soccer season, we would like to share important updates regarding age group alignment, tryout dates, and pathway-specific structures.

Age Group Alignment Update (Effective 2026–2027 Season)

Beginning with the 2026–2027 season, youth soccer clubs across the country will transition from Birth Year–based age groups to School Year–based age groups. (With the exception of the MLS-Next Homegrown Division Program which will remain the Birth Year).

What this means: Players will be grouped based on their school grade year, rather than calendar birth year.

2026–2027 SSA Swarm FC Tryout Dates
U8 – U14 (Boys & Girls): May 18, 19, and 20
U15 – U19 (Boys & Girls): May 26, 27, and 28

Identification (ID) Events for Tier 1 Programs
Boys MLS-NEXT Homegrown Division: May 5 and May 7
GA/DPL ID Events: May 3 and May 4
These ID events are designed to identify players for advanced, league-specific development pathways.

We understand that these changes may bring questions. Our technical staff is committed to clear communication and ensuring each player is placed in the best possible developmental environment.

Southern Soccer Academy Swarm will be entering into the SCCL Summer League in 2026!

We aim to enter two teams per age-group alongside the current USL Academy, USL2 and USLW programs that will run through June and July. Pre-professional soccer will be at our home, Marathon Park and we can't wait to get started!

As a club, we believe this league offers a competitive summer option for our players and provides consistent training, a week long camp and competitive weekend matches!

Girls Tryouts - Sunday, January 25th at Mud Creek Soccer Complex - Times TBC

Overview:

SSA's Pre-Academy is a unique soccer development program for U5-U7 soccer players, which aims to accelerate the technical and tactical development of players preparing to participate in the U8 academy program. We have recognized that there are many talented U5-U7 players within our club, and in GA, who would benefit from a dedicated soccer environment to continue to nurture player ability and prepare them for higher-level soccer.

Purpose

To bridge the gap between Recreational soccer and the U8 Academy soccer. A more soccer focused environment is created for players who love the game where individual player development is paramount to master key soccer techniques and concepts that are required at a higher level of play. This program allows players to experience an academy soccer environment while preparing players and parents for the next step of the soccer process. This program does not replace U8 Recreational soccer but offers another avenue of continued growth in the beautiful game.

Eligibility

SSA Pre-Academy is available to all Recreational boys and girls who are in the U5-U7 age brackets. It is recommended, but not required, that players participate in a minimum of one season of Recreational soccer before considering the program. Interested players that are committed to the goal of development will be considered for this program and placed with the best interests of the player in mind. This program will have limited spaces to ensure a superior soccer environment is maintained.

Marietta, GA – [September 23rd 2025] – Swarm FC and Southern Soccer Academy Swarm are excited to announce the appointment of Andy Fensome as the new Technical Director .

An experienced former professional footballer and accomplished coach, Fensome brings over 22 years of coaching expertise spanning senior first teams, reserve squads, U21s, and youth professionals. His career has been defined by a commitment to excellence, strong organizational and communication skills ,a winning mentality with a player-focused approach that ensures both individual growth and team success.Andy leaves Preston North End FC in the English Championship where he served as the Head coach for the U18 team immediately to join Swarm and Southern Soccer Academy Swarm.

Fensome has consistently delivered results throughout his coaching journey, including league championships and two National Cup victories within the past three years . He has also been responsible for implementing and delivering daily coaching curriculums that align with Professional club philosophies, meeting both team and individual needs at every level.

In his new role, Fensome will work in Swarms growing network of clubs and Southern Soccer Academies USL and MLS NEXT platforms to identify, develop, and advance talent throughout Swarm FC and SSA Swarm’s players pathway. His leadership will be central to ensuring that players are supported from youth development phases all the way to the senior professional level.

It is with profound sadness that we share the heartbreaking news of the passing of Chase Stegall, a cherished member of the Southern Soccer Academy family. Chase passed away unexpectedly on the morning of June 2, 2025, while attending DePaul University.

Chase was part of SSA for over a decade, and during that time he embodied everything we stand for — dedication, resilience, character, and passion for the game. From his earliest days wearing the SSA badge to competing at the collegiate level, Chase left an indelible mark on everyone he encountered.

His joyful spirit, leadership, and love for the sport were evident to all who knew him. More than just a talented athlete, Chase was a mentor, a teammate, and a friend whose influence reached far beyond the field.

Our hearts are with Chase’s family, friends, coaches, and teammates during this unimaginably difficult time. He will forever be remembered as part of the SSA family.

Rest in peace, Chase. Your legacy lives on in the lives you touched, and your memory will always have a home here.

[Marietta, GA] — May 5th, 2025 — SSA Swarm is proud to announce the hiring of Dr. Josh Villalobos as the club’s new Head of Performance. In this role, Dr. Villalobos will oversee all aspects of sports science and performance across the club’s programming, including its premier USL platform at the top of the player development pyramid.

Dr. Villalobos brings a wealth of experience from the collegiate, club, and national team levels, offering a rare combination of academic excellence, applied performance science, and coaching leadership. Most recently, he served as the Director of Soccer at The Heritage School and previously held key roles with MOBA Soccer Academy, including Director of the Girls and Sport Science Program and Head of Sport Science for both the USL2 and USLW teams.

A former professional and international player, Josh Villalobos represented Puerto Rico at both the senior and U-23 levels and was a first-round draftee of the Atlanta Silverbacks in the United Soccer League. He played collegiately at Furman University as a member of the NSCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Team and competed with the United States U15 and U17 National Teams.

Josh holds a Ph.D. in Kinesiology, a Master’s in Exercise Science, and a Bachelor’s in Health and Exercise Science—all from Georgia State University. He has presented his research at national conferences and maintains professional memberships with the American College of Sports Medicine and the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

SSA Swarm FC Introduces Residential Academy in Partnership with Darlington School!

[Atlanta, Georgia] – [March 20th, 2025] – SSA Swarm FC is pleased to announce the launch of the SSA Swarm Residential Academy, a 10-month education and soccer development program in partnership with Darlington School. This initiative provides male and female student-athletes with a balanced pathway prioritising academic achievement and high-level residential soccer development.

Beginning in the fall of 2025, Darlington School Soccer Academy will become the Southern Soccer Swarm Residential Academy at Darlington School and gain access to SSA Swarms MLS NEXT platforms.

“This partnership will give our current players and recent alumni instant player pathway options during both the college recruiting process and college playing careers,” said Chad Liddle, director of Darlington School Soccer Academy. “SSA Swarm currently has a USL 2 team.”

“Participating in MLS NEXT Platforms, the most competitive youth league in the country, will empower our student-athletes in the academy to have access to a premier college-preparatory education and elite soccer training while at boarding school,” said Matthew Peer, assistant head of school for enrollment management. “We are thrilled to be part of SSA Swarm and to be able to provide our players access to the recently announced MLS NEXT expansion . In the MLS NEXT league, the players will have greater travel efficiency with fall regionalized league competitions and spring scheduling flexibility to continue our college experience trips that help set our program apart. Joining SSA Swarm’s MLS NEXT program will provide outstanding athletic opportunities for our players, while continuing to have Darlington students actively participate in all aspects of the life of the school.”

The Southern Soccer Swarm Residential Academy at Darlington School will have players taking part at the U16, U17 and U19 MLS next levels beginning in September 2025.

“Players will have access to the highest levels of competition and training as MLS NEXT is the elite platform for youth development in North America, building a clear pathway for more players to reach their highest potential, college exposure and placement as well as professional” Liddle.

In the expanded tier of MLS NEXT, clubs will participate in one of eight regional tournaments each season, in addition to the option for eligible age groups to attend MLS NEXT Fest in December. Regional tournaments will serve as qualifying for a championship event at MLS NEXT Cup in 2026. These events will be marquee talent identification opportunities for college, professional, and national team scouts to evaluate players.

Located on The Darlington School’s boarding campus, the program offers a structured environment where athletes can pursue their educational and athletic goals simultaneously, with access to quality coaching, competitive play, and collegiate recruitment opportunities.

Leadership Restructure for SSA Swarm FC Elite Youth

We’re thrilled to announce several key leadership appointments that will further strengthen our club and enhance the experience for all players across our programs. These updates reflect our unwavering commitment to providing top-tier development pathways and opportunities for success on and off the field.

Jack Coulton and Richard Foy have been named Assistant Directors of Coaching and will work closely alongside our Director of Coaching Gareth Evans. As part of these appointments Richard Foy will now become the GA and DPL Director with Jack Coulton overseeing all the clubs Academy Programs and SCCL aged up to U14. Their extensive experience and dedication to youth development will ensure our players continue to excel and thrive at every stage of the SSA Swarm youth ladder.

Trey Joiner has been appointed as Youth Recruitment Officer, leading efforts to identify and attract the best young talent to our programs. Trey’s expertise in spotting and nurturing potential will be invaluable as we grow our player base and evaluate players externally and internally.

USL Changes

Dear SSA Swarm Community,

As part of our commitment to creating a clear and ambitious pathway for players within the USL system, we are excited to announce a significant restructure to SSA Swarm’s USL platform for 2025. These changes align with our long-term vision and position our club for sustained success and development at every level.

Simon Davey will take on the role of USL Sporting Director and General Manager, overseeing all aspects of our USL platform and ensuring alignment with the club’s vision and methodology.

Jack Collison will serve as Head Coach of the USL2 Men’s team, bringing exceptional leadership and expertise to the program.

Jordan Davis will lead the USL W Women’s Team as Head Coach, driving success and development for our women’s program.

Garreth Barker will transition to USL Academy Manager, focusing on developing the next generation of talent and strengthening the bridge between our academy and senior teams.

Jack Coulton on the men’s program and a 'to be appointed assistant' on the women’s program will serve as Assistant Coaches and Set-Piece Coaches , contributing tactical insight and specialized strategies. Aimed to enhance our team’s success, the addition of a dedicated Set-Piece Coach is a vital role in modern soccer. Set-pieces are critical moments that often decide matches and this specialized focus reflects our commitment to innovation, precision, and excellence, elevating our performance on the field.

Gareth Evans on the men’s and Hagan Robinson on the women’s will join as Assistant Coaches and IDP (Individual Development Plan) coaches, focusing on tailored player development to maximize individual potential within the team structure. Having an IDP (Individual Development Plan) coach for the USL team is vital for ensuring each player’s growth is tailored to their unique needs and potential. This specialized role focuses on assessing players’ strengths and areas for improvement, setting personalized goals, and creating targeted training programs to help them excel. By aligning individual development with the team’s overall strategy, the IDP Coach ensures players maximize their contributions on the field while progressing towards total immersion on the SSA Swarm playing identity.. This role not only enhances performance but also strengthens the club’s reputation for nurturing top talent.

August 6, 2024 – Atlanta, GA – Southern Soccer Academy Swarm (SSA Swarm), the dominant youth flagship club of Swarm FC, has appointed Jack Collison as Director of Methodology. This strategic hire comes in the wake of Swarm FC’s recent partnership with Brentford FC of the English Premier League, aiming to revolutionize the soccer ecosystem within the United States.

In his new role, Collison will also serve as a Global Ambassador for Swarm FC, focusing on the implementation of innovative methodologies and best practices derived from Brentford FC’s esteemed youth soccer program. This collaboration is set to elevate the sport by nurturing talent, enhancing player pathways, and advance coach education.

About Jack Collison

Jack Collison brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the “Swarm”, both from his notable playing career and his extensive coaching background.

Playing Career

West Ham United (2006-2014) : Jack began his professional career with West Ham United, making over 100 appearances and 14 goals in the Premier League and earning a reputation as a tenacious and skillful midfielder.
Bournemouth (2013) and Wigan (2014) : On loan.
Wales National Team (2008-2014) : He also made significant contributions to the national squad, earning 15 caps.
Peterborough United (2015) : After signing a one-year contract with the League One club, Collison retired from professional play in 2016.

Coaching Career

Peterborough United (2015-2017) : Jack transitioned into coaching, starting with Peterborough United’s youth academy.
West Ham United U18 and U21 (2017-2019) : He returned to West Ham to coach their U18 and U21 teams.
Atlanta United (2019-2020) : Moving to the United States, Jack served as the head coach of Atlanta United’s U17 academy team, helping to shape the next generation of American soccer stars.
Atlanta United (2020-2022) : Elevated to head coach of the MLS reserve team ATL UTD 2. He led the team to the highest USL Championship standing in club history.
Huntsville City FC (2023-2024) : Most recently, Jack was the inaugural head coach of Huntsville City FC, where he led the team to several successful seasons and earned accolades for his leadership.

Intrepid Sports and Brentford FC of the English Premier League Announce Partnership to Launch "Swarm FC "

[Atlanta, GA] – Intrepid Sports and Brentford FC of the English Premier League are delighted to announce a partnership to establish a new soccer ecosystem across the United States: Swarm FC.

This innovative collaboration brings together the expertise, resources, and passion of two established organizations to create a dynamic platform for soccer development, player pathways and coach education.

This partnership will see coaches from the USA receive specialized training from Brentford FC, to support their coaching education and experience. Select players will have the opportunity to visit the UK for training sessions, friendly matches, and Premier League experiences, while coaches and technical staff from Brentford will conduct clinics and training sessions in the USA. In addition, signed merchandise from Brentford FC will be provided for fundraising in the local area.

As part of this collaboration, Intrepid Sports and Brentford FC have recognized the dominant youth club, Southern Soccer Academy, as their flagship club. SSA will now become Southern Soccer

Academy Swarm FC (“SSA Swarm FC”) for the 2024-2025 season. The Atlanta-based organization, which currently boasts over 12,000 active members across the state of Georgia will begin its rebranding with Swarm FC with immediate effect.

Swarm FC emerges as a testament to the shared vision of Intrepid Sports and Brentford FC to foster excellence and opportunity in the realm of soccer. By combining their strengths, these organizations aim to elevate the sport while nurturing talent and inspiring the next generation of players.

This collaboration will enable us to integrate a pathway within the Swarm FC model, offering US-based players an opportunity to reach the highest levels of

world soccer. Since my arrival in the US in 2012, the vision has been to establish a club equipped with the players, staff, facilities, and programs that provide a genuine pathway from recreational soccer to the professional level.

“Phase 1 focused on expanding our membership in Georgia, Phase 2 involved investing in our staff infrastructure, and Phase 3 saw the enhancement of our home facility, Marathon Park. With this new partnership, we are now embarking on Phase 4."

As the newest addition to the US soccer scene, Swarm FC is poised to make a lasting impact, both on and off the field. With current USL franchise properties (Southern Soccer Academy), such as USL Boys and Girls Academy and Pre-Professional USL W League and USL League Two.
